On Sunday 28 January 2024, an inauguration ceremony, held under the patronage of Mgr Charles J. Scicluna, Archbishop of Malta, took place at the Parish Church of St Leonard in Kirkop. The event marked the unveiling of the restored painting of Marija Addolorata, attributed to renowned artist Francesco Zahra.
The ceremony featured insightful speeches, including Kenneth Cassar’s reflections on the artwork’s historical significance and Marizia Projetto presentation of the meticulous restoration process by Atelier del Restauro. Honorable Owen Bonnici, Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, along with Fr Martin Cardona, Kirkop Parish Priest and the Archbishop also delivered speeches. Musical interludes directed by Hermann Farrugia Frantz enriched the celebratory atmosphere.
Representatives from APS Bank, one of the main sponsors of the restoration, attended the event. Jeremy Vassallo, CSR Manager highlighted in his speech, “Our cultural and artistic heritage serves as a vital link between past and present generations.
