About this event

The 34th talk of the APS talks series, titled ‘The silent pandemic: Antibiotic resistance’, will be presented by Prof. Michael A. Borg on Thursday 12 Sep 2024 at 18:30.

Join us for this insightful event where Prof. Borg will explore how antibiotics have been the cornerstone of medical practice for over 70 years, shaping modern healthcare as we know it. However, in recent decades, we have witnessed a troubling trend: bacteria, particularly those responsible for serious, life-threatening infections in hospitals, are increasingly becoming resistant to antibiotics. This means that treatments that were once effective in eliminating bacterial infections are now losing their effectiveness.

Prof. Borg will address critical questions, including: What is driving this rise in antibiotic resistance? Should we be concerned? How might this impact us? And most importantly, what steps can we take to reverse this trend and ensure that antibiotics remain effective for future generations?
