We are deeply saddened by the loss of Joseph Vella Bondin. His invaluable contributions to music and prose have left a lasting mark on Malta’s cultural heritage.
Joseph Vella Bondin served as the artistic director for APS Bank’s annual concerts between 2001 and 2016. He also chaired the adjudicating panel for APS Bank competitions for Maltese composers. His meticulously researched concert programmes evolved into a comprehensive manual on Maltese composers spanning the past three centuries. His efforts in editing music scores revitalised selected works, while their recordings preserved talents and sounds from various archives.
In 2016, APS Bank published the book ‘The Great Maltese Composers,’ authored by Joseph Vella Bondin. This publication, dedicated to all Maltese composers, enriched Malta’s musical patrimony and enhanced its international cultural profile. As the first Maltese musicologist to gain international recognition, his pioneering research and numerous publications brought national and international acclaim to Maltese classical music.
