At the Annual General Meeting of the Malta Bankers’ Association (MBA) held on 1 June 2022, APS Bank p.l.c. CEO Marcel Cassar was appointed Chair of the Board of the Association, having previously held the role between 2018 and 2020. He succeeds Rick Hunkin, CEO Bank of Valletta p.l.c. Henry Schmeltzer, Director, Commercial Strategy and Head of Legal at MeDirect Bank (Malta) p.l.c. was elected Deputy Chair.
In his capacity, Mr Cassar will also represent the Association on the Board of the European Banking Federation (EBF), of which the MBA is a full member. The EBF unites 32 national banking associations in Europe that represent some 3,500 banks employing about 2.6 million people and extending over €23 trillion in lending to the European economy.
Thanking Mr Hunkin for his stewardship of the MBA over the past two years, as well as outgoing Deputy Chair Joseph Said, CEO Lombard Bank Malta p.l.c., Marcel Cassar said: “It is an honour to be chairing again the Association and, together with Henry and other Board members, collectively work towards a more collaborative environment for the banking sector with its many stakeholders, through information, advocacy, education and outreach.”
